Program Overview
The Law Enforcement Skills program at Alexandria Technical College is designed to give the prospective peace officer the "hands-on" skills training necessary to qualify for licensure in Minnesota. The goal is to allow the student to develop skills which are tactically safe and realistic. The mission is to expose the students to many situations that a patrol officer may encounter.
The Skills program is designed to provide a maximum amount of hands-on training in the practical aspects of law enforcement and could well be the most demanding portion of law enforcement career preparation. Successful completion of the Skills training program qualifies students to take the Minnesota Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) license examination. The Minnesota POST Board certifies the Law Enforcement Skills program.
All instruction occurs at the Alexandria Technical College campus with the exception of Defensive and Pursuit Driving, which is held at the St. Cloud driving range. Applicants must have their academic coordinator's signed agreement to attend Skills training and be certified in first aid. ATC has an open door policy for any college that chooses to send students through the Law Enforcement Skills training.
Qualifications
The Law Enforcement Skills program is a natural progression of the training received from academic studies. Instructors draw from years of practical law enforcement street experience to teach students new survival skills.
