
Program Overview
The Phlebotomy program provides students the training necessary for employment and advancement in the health care field. The 20-credit certificate provides up-to-date skills training through classroom and laboratory experiences. Upon satisfactory completion of the classroom training at the college, each student is assigned to an affiliating clinical site for 5 credits of clinical experience. During this period, the student is under direct supervision of a medical laboratory technician or technologist. Graduates of this one semester Phlebotomy program are eligible to take the examinations given by the National Certification Agency for Laboratory Personnel and the Board of Registry Examination of the American Society for Clinical Pathology.
Qualifications
Individuals considering the Phlebotomy program should have a strong interest in the medical field and a desire to share in the challenges of the modern healthcare team. The phlebotomist generally works in a clinical laboratory under the supervision of a medical laboratory technician or technologist. The primary responsibility of a phlebotomist is collecting blood specimens from patients for the purpose of laboratory analysis.
Accepted students are required to have a physical examination. Information regarding Hepatitis B vaccination is also given to each accepted student prior to admission. Due to Minnesota legislative mandate, students are subjected to a criminal background check prior to placement in any clinical facility. Students found to have criminal backgrounds are ineligible to participate in clinical rotations and, thus, not eligible for graduation.
